Horrible fandom and I no longer enjoy talking about anime with people because I am embarrased to be associated with the hardcore fans of this fandom. I think the fandom as of late is embarrasing and its escalated so far that the anime haters are outnumbered by the self-deprecation type anime fans. Or is it's mostly the fans themselves projecting their social insecurities into the medium itself causing them to view anime and its fans as much worse than it actually is, when it's actually mostly fine as it is now?Its the fandom, not anime. IF we include ALL anime then no its not niche. Quick Edit: Cause I really hate the notion "anime is niche" I know most people don't think Pokemon or Yugioh because they are marketed towards kids as toys and aren't really "serious" series but honestly those type of shows were pelted at me as a kid and sell a ton of merchandise every year in the West and most kids watching any mainstream kids network have seen them. Personally I don't have a self-deprecation tendency towards my choice of entertainment but who knows maybe its different for most people. Though I guess if I would have to say probably number 2 mostly. (to be fair though doesn't mean they still can be low quality entertainment) Its like avoiding reality television for a comparable every entertainment medium has its problems. There is just a lot more being produced and those that are tend to be cash grabs. As for the questionable quality that all comes down to mass production honestly I think there has always been a good amount of anime to come every year. Most nations animation industries and movies never usually make it outside of the country origin (ignoring NA and Britain) so Japan is obviously doing something right. To put this into context for say a NA base and say Britain since they are also English speaking the amount of foreign films or animation that get anywhere near the amount of attention from us is pretty nil (unfortunately cause there are some great French amimated films go check out The Secret of the Kells if you haven't), Bollywood has a bit of a presence I suppose but I would argue that is still niche to a non Indian either nationally or ethnically. In Japan itself anime and manga dominate their pop culture and its not niche. Plus many anime have broken into the mainstream through Ghilbi films and other famous films like Your Name. Fact is many popular series that exist such as super heroes being thrust into the mainstream were once looked down upon if you enjoyed the content as "nerdy" same with Star Wars. Its a sarcastic response to those who go after the medium as a whole based on a preconception or stereotype. Or is it's mostly the fans themselves projecting their social insecurities into the medium itself causing them to view anime and its fans as much worse than it actually is, when it's actually mostly fine as it is now? Simple question, Do you think the self-deprecation tendencies among anime fans are a result of the failures of the anime medium to succeed in becoming a non-niche type of entertainment due to the arguably questionable quality of a notable portion of anime and the attitude of hardcore otakus?
